![]() “Duke Nukem 3” would at least appear to be in 3D. The creators of the Duke Nukem series – Apogee/3D Realms – decided to follow this trend for the third game. Of course, in the years immediately after the release of ID Software’s “Doom” in 1993, first-person shooter games began to replace 2D platformers as the dominant genre of computer games. These were cartoonish 2D sci-fi action games with multiple episodes and large complex non-linear levels, which required the player to search for keys as well as jump between platforms and shoot monsters. He fought supervillains ( such as the fiendish Doctor Proton in the first game), robots and/or evil alien creature s (eg: the “Rigelatins” in the second game) who were trying to take over the Earth. It’s lesser-known than “Duke Nukem 3D”, but it’s actually a fairly good game. This is a screenshot from “Duke Nukem II” (1993), a cartoonish 2D platform game with a sci-fi setting. ![]()
